Good morning, and welcome to today's video, wherever you're tuning in from around the world. Yesterday we started getting into the power of meditation: the power of calming your mind and balancing mind, body, and spirit. We talked about reconnecting to that heart space and reconnecting to your higher self.

We talked about how, when you operate from that place throughout your day, the answers fill themselves in. The processes, the procedures, the words — they just fill themselves in. You catch yourself thinking, 'Wow, I didn't even know I could do that. I didn't even know I had that in me. I didn't even know I could present like that.' Something came over you. Something inspired you. It wasn't you presenting — something more was with you.

Some of you watching may have had a firsthand experience of exactly what I'm talking about. I used this reference yesterday: you're in the passenger seat, and it's on autopilot. You have stepped back. You have let go of control. You have given that control to a higher power, with the belief and faith that what you want is going to happen, and an unwavering knowingness that it will. This is the level of thinking — these are the paradigms.

This is how people operate when they really tap in and tune in to their higher self. So today, we're going to dive a little deeper into meditation. We're going to re-explain more of the benefits, get into some techniques and processes, and give you things you can implement today to really move the needle. Let's get into the reading: studies relating to the impact of meditation on the brain.

Meditation — calming the mind — has been shown to impact psychological well-being by reducing stress, depression, anxiety, blood pressure, and addiction. It reconfigures your neuropathways. It helps you reconfigure your paradigms. It also boosts the immune system and improves your memory. But did you know that meditation can change the brain's structure in positive and powerful ways?

Science has always believed the brain essentially stops changing after adulthood. That's not true. You have the capacity to heal the emotional dysfunction of your own brain when you increase your awareness of mindfulness. Listen to this: when you increase your awareness of the power of meditation, you can transform your brain, create new circuits, and change the way neurons communicate with each other.

Whenever you engage in a behavior repeatedly — doing something over and over again — it can lead to physical changes in your brain. The studies that follow help reveal meditation's effect on the brain. We're talking about how the spiritual affects the physical, about how everything starts in the mind and is represented afterward in the physical, in the body, in the external. I spoke about this in a previous video on 'body forms' — the study of how the body changes in correlation to these paradigms, to these neurological connections. So let's get into the studies on meditation's effects on the brain.

Research from Yale and Harvard has demonstrated that regular meditation doesn't just increase function in the frontal lobes — it literally increases their size and volume. One widely cited study showed that an eight-week mindfulness meditation program can lead to structural brain changes, including increased gray matter density in the hippocampus and in structures associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection. Two months. Eight weeks.

Studies show that if you meditate consistently every day for two months, you'll start to increase the gray matter density in the structures associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection. A 2005 study on American men and women who meditated just 40 minutes a day showed they had thicker cortical walls than non-meditators. What this means is that their brains were aging at a slower rate. Cortical thickness is also associated with decision making, attention, and memory.

This is so deep — we have to get away from the western world's perception of meditation. Here in the West, we've been conditioned to see meditation as a hippie practice: going out in the woods, sitting with your legs crossed. Please change that perception if that's you. Meditation allows your brain to age slower — your mind stays more youthful, more fresh — and it improves decision making, memory, and attention.

How empowering, how impactful are those three areas of your life? If you can become a better decision maker — more prompt, clearer thinking — you get better results and a better experience in this life. Now think about your attention.

The average person's attention span is about three seconds. Think of a lamp. Think of a microphone. Think of a hot dog. A croissant. The color purple. You're everywhere, every three seconds. If you can improve your attention span — your ability to focus on an idea to the exclusion of all outside stimuli — everything changes.

If you can focus on your goal, on the feeling of the wish fulfilled, and hold that vibration for 90 seconds, three minutes — your memory improves too. People say, 'Oh, I have a terrible memory, I can't remember anything.' We talked about this yesterday: the brain fog, the not-knowing. All of that confusion can start working in your favor once this meditative practice is put into place. Two months, consistently, and you'll start to see those changes.

Now, the pain matrix. In one study, subjects were given a painful stimulus — an uncomfortably hot sensation on their arms. They were first given the sensation without any instruction, then it was repeated with instruction to practice mindfulness, asking themselves, 'Is this a tolerable pain? Can I handle it?' After using the mindfulness technique, researchers found that participants reported about 27% lower pain sensation, and measured 45% less activity in the brain's neuropathic pain matrix. The researchers concluded that mindfulness can improve both the perception of pain and the actual neural response to pain — and that the number of hours spent in a meditative state correlated directly with the subject's pain threshold.

Now, the prefrontal cortex. It begins to thin with age, contributing to cognitive decline in later years — it's normal, people get older, they start forgetting things, they lose things. Meditation encourages a reversal of this pattern, alongside a reversal of neurodegeneration. The power of meditation is, in effect, repairing your mind: strengthening your neuropathways, strengthening and thickening the prefrontal cortex.

This area of the brain is also responsible for the mental conflict that arises when your belief system is contradicted by new information — a concept known as cognitive dissonance, developed by psychologist Leon Festinger in the late 1950s. He showed that when a person is confronted with a challenge, with new information, they're likely to reject it and preserve their current understanding of the world. That's paradigms. We naturally reject things we don't understand.

One more time: we naturally reject things we don't understand. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for that mental conflict. When your beliefs are contradicted by new information, you've got a battle on your hands — your paradigm is waging a royal battle, saying, 'This is new information, and it's not in harmony with what we think.'

Your paradigm rejects what doesn't match it and pushes it away. When a person is confronted with a challenge or new information, they're likely to reject it and preserve their current level of programming — this is cognitive dissonance, and it's responsible for resistance to change in a person's attitude. Meditation supports the expansion of a person's threshold for cognitive dissonance, helping to expand their view of themselves and the world around them.

The heart space — meditation can also help protect against heart disease. One study of 40 adults found that an eight-week meditation program reduced concentrations of the marker C-reactive protein, which is associated with the development of heart disease. Meditation also forms a reconnection with the sacred heart, unwinding you from the mental realm and taking you back home into timeless, still presence.

It's fascinating to be aware of the positive effects of meditation. Just being aware of the benefits — of what it can do — can lead to changes in the physical structure of the brain, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. Plasticity — what a word. This kind of life you lead is solely within your own control, and everybody has a conscious choice and the capacity to control their destiny. Simply meditating 30 minutes a day can change your brain, your heart, and your life.

I say this in almost every video — don't overlook it. Thirty days, ninety days, eight weeks, two months. There's an idea that if you do something consistently every single day for 28 days — we call it a month, 30 days — that's when you start to really reprogram the neuropathways.

Do something consciously every day for 30 days, and that's when you'll start to change your physical makeup and rewire your neurological programming. We're like a computer — our mind, our paradigm, is the operating system. The way a computer functions, it needs commands to tell it what to do, how to operate — that's the operating system. For us, it's our paradigm, our way of thinking. So look at your results.

Look at your results monetarily. Look at your results energetically, based on how you feel. Look at your results based on your level of awareness, your level of joy, your level of happiness. Look at your results in terms of how strong your relationships are. Understand the areas of life you need, want, and desire to improve — you need to rewire that neurological programming in your brain.

My recommendation is through repetition: apply this idea every day for 30 days, every day for 60 days, and watch the impact happen. I am confident in saying that if you implement this into your life, you will be calmer. You will be clearer. You will be more apt to make better decisions. You will have a stronger attention span to focus on an idea to the exclusion of all outside stimuli, and you're going to improve your memory.
